“ちょっと” (pronounced “chotto”)
Meaning: a little, a bit
ちょっと (chotto) is a versatile word. When used to mean “a little,” ちょっと is most often used within a sentence rather than on its own. However, ちょっと can also be used on its own in some cases. Here are some examples:
- to express surprise (“What!?” / “Whoa!” / “Wait, what?”)
- to get someone’s attention (“Hey”)
- to express frustration or tell someone to stop (“Hey!”)
- to politely refuse or decline something (“Well…”, “Um…”, “Thank you, but no…”)
